Perfectionism, instagram, and the road
finding a new lens
Coaching is like a camera. A camera can capture an image in a million different ways depending on the lens used, the angle chosen, the lighting, and a million other factors and choices.
As humans, when we come across an issue we tend to take a one-view approach. We choose the lens we are comfortable with and get stuck in the image it creates. This tendency can be debilitating, especially when we choose a lens that is enveloped in hopelessness and fear. When we get stuck in this loop we become paralyzed and can lose out on an opportunity to step into our full potential. But we can choose a new viewpoint. Our viewpoint is just a product of our thoughts and whether we realize it or not we choose our thoughts, and we have the power to change them.
I’ve walked the same walk
I hate boxes. Yet I constantly find myself trying to squeeze into them. Squeezing into boxes is what most of us are taught to do from a young age. We receive labels as children and spend the rest of our lives trying to live up to them; you’re so tough, you’re so smart, your so beautiful. Or we spend our lives trying to squeeze into boxes we think we are supposed to be in, like smaller bodies and bigger offices. We are surrounded by messages that tell us these boxes will provide us with happiness so we choose to do everything in our power to contort ourselves to fit into them.
Coaching 101
The fragility of someday
We have so many dreams for someday. Someday I’ll live in a big beautiful house. Someday I’ll take that trip to India. Someday I’ll lose those 10 lbs and finally be happy. Someday I’ll get married and my mom will help me pick out the wedding dress of our dreams. Someday is a figment of our imagination, a beautiful dream we create in our minds. Unfortunately, someday doesn’t always come. The dream can die from years and years of saying “next year,” or it can be ripped away from you with no warning.
